walker percy*

the thing i like about walker percy is that his south is not
overly romanticized spanish moss and lustful humidity or
honeysuckle vines and lacy black ironwork because really
the south is not all like that - the south is only some like
that. and really it is dirty sometimes and grimy sometimes
and bare sometimes but really a lot more this way than it
is the other and in a way that the northern and western is
not. it is as much and gradually more about condos and suburbs
and high rises as it is about plantation mansions and two room
backwoods grey porched shacks. as much about sprawling
green golf courses as country dirt roads.

a saran wrapped praline identity sold in a quaint gift shop next
to cotton boll postcards.
